Music is the movement of the heart; sound is the image of music. Literary talent and rhythm are the decoration of sound. A gentleman moves his roots, enjoys his image, and then manages his decoration. Therefore, first beat the drum to warn, three steps to see the direction, start again to go forward, and return to order after chaos. Be vigorous but not withdrawn, and be extremely obscure but not hidden. Enjoy your aspirations alone, and do not tire of your way; fully promote your way, and do not be selfish. Therefore, when feelings are revealed, righteousness is established, and when music ends, virtue is respected. Gentlemen love goodness, while villains listen to faults. Therefore, it is said that music is the greatest way to lead the people. Music is giving; ritual is repaying. Music is to enjoy what it was born from; and ritual is to return to what it started from. Music is to show virtue, and ritual is to repay emotion and return to the beginning. The so-called great carriage is the emperor's carriage. The dragon flag with nine tassels is the emperor's banner. The blue-black border is the emperor's precious tortoise. Following it are the cattle and sheep, which are used to give gifts to the princes. Music is the emotion that cannot be changed. Rituals are the principles that cannot be changed. Music is unified, and rituals distinguish differences. The theory of rituals and music governs human emotions. To understand the origin and know the changes is the emotion of music; to be sincere and to get rid of falsehood is the principle of rituals. Rituals and music can understand the emotions of heaven and earth, reach the virtue of the gods, and inspire the spirits of the upper and lower, and condense the essence and the coarse, and lead the rules of father and son, monarch and minister. Therefore, when the great man promotes rituals and music, heaven and earth will be bright. When heaven and earth are in harmony, yin and yang are in harmony, and the warmth of the old woman nurtures all things, then the grass and trees grow, the buds grow, the wings flutter, the horns grow, the hibernating insects wake up, the feathered ones lie down, the hairy ones conceive, the viviparous ones are not killed, and the egg-laying ones are not killed, then the way of music returns to it. Music does not refer to the Huangzhong, Dalu, string music, and singing, which are the last part of music, so children dance to them. Spreading the banquet, setting up the sacrificial vessels, arranging the trays and bowls, and using the rise and fall as rituals are the last part of rituals, so there are officials in charge of them. The musicians distinguish between sounds and poems, so they face north and play the strings; the ancestral priests distinguish between the rituals of the ancestral temple, so they play after the corpse; the business priests distinguish between the funeral rituals, so they play after the host. Therefore, virtue is the upper, and art is the lower; behavior is the first, and things are the last. Therefore, the ancient kings had upper and lower, first and last, and then they could have control over the world.

Sacrifices should not be frequent, as frequent sacrifices will lead to trouble, and trouble will lead to disrespect. Therefore, a gentleman should follow the way of heaven: Spring sacrifices and autumn tastings. When frost and dew have fallen, a gentleman will feel sad when walking on them, not because of the cold. In spring, when rain and dew have wetted, a gentleman will feel terrified when walking on them, as if he is about to see it. Music is used to welcome, and sorrow is used to send off. Therefore, there is music in the sacrifices but no music in the tastings. Bring harmony inside and disperse harmony outside. On the day of the sacrifices: think about where he lives, think about his laughter, think about his aspirations, think about what he enjoys, and think about what he likes. After three days of sacrifices, you can see what he has done for harmony. On the day of sacrifice: when entering the room, one must see the position; when going out of the door, one must hear the voice; when going out of the door, one must hear the sigh. Therefore, the filial piety of the ancient kings is that the color does not forget the eyes, the sound does not stop in the ears, and the desires of the heart do not forget the heart. If you love, it will be preserved; if you are sincere, it will be remembered. If it is preserved and not forgotten in the heart, how can you not be respectful? A gentleman respectfully supports when he is alive and respectfully offers sacrifices to his dead, thinking that he will not be humiliated throughout his life. A gentleman has a lifelong mourning, which is the meaning of the anniversary of the death. Not using the anniversary of the death is not a bad omen. On the day of the death, one's mind is to reach a certain point, but he dare not use his private interests to the fullest. Only the sage can offer sacrifices to the emperor, and the filial son can offer sacrifices to his parents. Offering sacrifices means to pay respect. After paying respect, one can offer sacrifices. Therefore, the filial son does not feel ashamed when he is in front of the corpse. The king leads the sacrifice, and the lady offers the bowl. The king offers the corpse, and the lady offers the rice. The ministers assist the king, and the women assist the lady. Be respectful, be loyal, and be happy. Don't be too eager to entertain. King Wen's sacrifice: treat the dead as if they were alive, think of the dead as if they didn't want to live, mourn on the anniversary of the death, and mention the taboo as if you saw your parents. The loyalty of the sacrifice is like seeing the loved ones of the parents, and like the desire to express it; is it King Wen? The Book of Songs says: "I wake up in the morning and can't sleep, I have two people in my mind." This is King Wen's poem. The day after the sacrifice, I wake up in the morning and can't sleep, and I offer it to the deceased, and then I think about it. On the day of the sacrifice, there is half joy and half sorrow; the feast must be joyful, and the arrival must be sorrowful.

All the learning of the crown prince and the scholars must be in season. In spring and summer, they learn to play the sword and spear, and in autumn and winter, they learn to play the feather and flute, all in the East Sequence. The minor music director learns the sword and spear, and the big official assists him. The flute master learns the spear and the flute master assistant assists him. The official plays the drum in the south. In spring, he recites and in summer, the master orders him. In autumn, Gu Zong learns the ritual, and the person in charge of the ritual orders him; in winter, he reads and the person in charge of the book orders him. The ritual is in Gu Zong, and the book is in Shangxiang. All the rituals of sacrifice, caring for the elderly, asking for words, and talking together are ordered by the minor music director in the East Sequence. The big music director learns to dance the sword and spear, speak, and ask for words, all of which are taught by the big music director, and the big official discusses and discusses in the East Sequence.
