There are five great ways in the world, and three ways to carry them out. They are: ruler and minister, father and son, husband and wife, brothers, and friends. These five are the great ways in the world. Knowledge, benevolence, and courage are the three great virtues in the world, and one way to carry them out. Some people are born with To know, one may learn and then know, or one may learn through hardship, but knowing is the same. One may act when comfortable, or act for profit, or act reluctantly, but success is the same. Confucius said, "To love learning is near to knowledge, to exert oneself to act is near to benevolence, and to know shame is near to courage. Knowing these three, one will know how to cultivate oneself; knowing how to cultivate oneself, one will know how to govern others; knowing how to govern others, one will know how to govern the empire and the state. There are nine classics for governing the empire and the state: cultivating oneself, respecting the virtuous, loving one's relatives, respecting ministers, and being considerate of ministers. If one cultivates oneself, the Way will stand; if one respects the virtuous, one will not be confused; if one loves one's relatives, one's elder brothers will not complain; if one respects ministers, one will not be dazzled; if one is considerate of ministers, the scholars will repay him with great courtesy; if one treats the common people with kindness, the people will encourage him; if one attracts all kinds of craftsmen, one will have sufficient financial resources; if one is gentle with distant people, the four directions will come to him; if one wins over the princes, the world will fear him. . Dress in good clothes and do not move without propriety. This is to cultivate oneself; get rid of slander and stay away from beauty, despise goods and value virtue, this is to encourage the virtuous; respect their positions, give them high salaries, share their likes and dislikes, this is to encourage relatives; give officials high positions and assign them important tasks, this is to encourage ministers; be loyal and trustworthy and give them high salaries, this is to encourage scholars; impose light taxes in due time, this is to encourage the people; review the officials daily and examine them monthly, and after the food is in accordance with the work, this is to encourage all craftsmen; send off and welcome back, praise the good and sympathize with the incompetent, this is to appease the distant people; continue the extinct, raise the abandoned countries, and govern the chaos and hold the danger. Court visits are timely, and the visits are generous and the visits are light, this is to win over the princes. There are nine classics for governing the country and the world, and the reason for carrying them out is the same. Everything is established if it is planned in advance, and it will be abolished if it is not planned in advance. If you plan before you speak, you will not stumble; if you plan before you act, you will not be in trouble; if you plan before you act, you will not be guilty; if you plan before you act, you will not be poor. If you do not get the support of your superiors, you cannot govern the people. If you get the support of your superiors, you will not be able to trust your friends. Friends, if you don't get the upper hand, you will not be able to trust your friends; if you are obedient to your relatives, you will not be able to trust your friends; if you are obedient to your relatives, you will not be honest to yourself, you will not be obedient to your relatives; if you are honest to yourself, you will not understand what is good, you will not be honest to yourself. Sincerity is the way of heaven; sincerity is the way of man. Sincerity is not trying to hit the mark, not thinking and getting it, and calmly following the middle way is a sage. Sincerity is the one who chooses the good and sticks to it. Learn widely, ask carefully, think carefully, distinguish clearly, and practice diligently. If you don't learn, you can't learn it, so don't give up; if you don't ask, you can't know it, so don't give up; if you don't think, you can't get it, so don't give up; if you don't distinguish, you can't distinguish clearly, so don't give up; if you don't practice, you can't practice it diligently. If a person can do one thing, he can do a hundred times more; if a person can do ten things, he can do a thousand times more. If you can really do this, you will be wise even if you are stupid, and strong even if you are weak. "Sincerity is called nature. Sincerity is called education. Sincerity leads to clarity, and clarity leads to sincerity.

Zigong withdrew and said to You, “May I ask if rituals are used to lead to evil and complete good?” The Master said, “Yes.” “Then what?” The Master said, “The meaning of suburban and communal sacrifices is to benevolent to ghosts and gods; the ritual of tasting the sacrifices is to benevolent to the ancestors and grandparents; the ritual of offering sacrifices is to benevolent to the dead and the dead; the ritual of shooting in the village is to benevolent to the villagers; the ritual of eating and drinking is to benevolent to guests.” The Master said, “If you understand the meaning of suburban and communal sacrifices and the ritual of tasting the sacrifices, governing the country will be as easy as pointing to the palm of your hand! Therefore, with this, the residence is well-mannered, so the elders and the younger ones are distinguished. With this, the inner chambers are well-mannered, so the three clans are harmonious. With this, the court is well-mannered, so the official ranks are well-organized. With this, the hunting is well-mannered, so the military affairs are relaxed. With this, the military is well-mannered, so the military achievements are accomplished. Therefore, the palaces are built with the right scale, the tripods are measured with the right image, the food is served at the right time, the music is played with the right rhythm, the carriages are well-mannered, the ghosts and gods are worshipped with the right style, the funerals are mournful, the arguments are well-organized, the officials are well-organized, and the government affairs are well-implemented; they are applied to the body and arranged in front of the people, so that all the actions of the people are well-organized. ”

Music is the movement of the heart; sound is the image of music. Literary talent and rhythm are the decoration of sound. A gentleman moves his roots, enjoys his image, and then manages his decoration. Therefore, first beat the drum to warn, three steps to see the direction, start again to go forward, and return to order after chaos. Be vigorous but not withdrawn, and be extremely obscure but not hidden. Enjoy your aspirations alone, and do not tire of your way; fully promote your way, and do not be selfish. Therefore, when feelings are revealed, righteousness is established, and when music ends, virtue is respected. Gentlemen love goodness, while villains listen to faults. Therefore, it is said that music is the greatest way to lead the people. Music is giving; ritual is repaying. Music is to enjoy what it was born from; and ritual is to return to what it started from. Music is to show virtue, and ritual is to repay emotion and return to the beginning. The so-called great carriage is the emperor's carriage. The dragon flag with nine tassels is the emperor's banner. The blue-black border is the emperor's precious tortoise. Following it are the cattle and sheep, which are used to give gifts to the princes. Music is the emotion that cannot be changed. Rituals are the principles that cannot be changed. Music is unified, and rituals distinguish differences. The theory of rituals and music governs human emotions. To understand the origin and know the changes is the emotion of music; to be sincere and to get rid of falsehood is the principle of rituals. Rituals and music can understand the emotions of heaven and earth, reach the virtue of the gods, and inspire the spirits of the upper and lower, and condense the essence and the coarse, and lead the rules of father and son, monarch and minister. Therefore, when the great man promotes rituals and music, heaven and earth will be bright. When heaven and earth are in harmony, yin and yang are in harmony, and the warmth of the old woman nurtures all things, then the grass and trees grow, the buds grow, the wings flutter, the horns grow, the hibernating insects wake up, the feathered ones lie down, the hairy ones conceive, the viviparous ones are not killed, and the egg-laying ones are not killed, then the way of music returns to it. Music does not refer to the Huangzhong, Dalu, string music, and singing, which are the last part of music, so children dance to them. Spreading the banquet, setting up the sacrificial vessels, arranging the trays and bowls, and using the rise and fall as rituals are the last part of rituals, so there are officials in charge of them. The musicians distinguish between sounds and poems, so they face north and play the strings; the ancestral priests distinguish between the rituals of the ancestral temple, so they play after the corpse; the business priests distinguish between the funeral rituals, so they play after the host. Therefore, virtue is the upper, and art is the lower; behavior is the first, and things are the last. Therefore, the ancient kings had upper and lower, first and last, and then they could have control over the world.
