The host faces south outside the host's room, and the wife's body faces west and east. When the body is moved and the coffin is finished, the prime minister informs the host, and the host descends, facing north at the bottom of the hall. The king touches the body, and the host bows and kowtows. The king descends, raises the host and asks the wife to follow him. In the funeral of a senior official, the coffin is about to be laid out, and the king is not present, the rest of the rituals are the same as those of the senior officials. There is propriety in residence, and there is moderation in advance and retreat. All officials are in their proper place, and all things are in their proper order. The Book of Songs says: "A virtuous man and a gentleman, his etiquette is not wrong. If his etiquette is not wrong, it will be the right way for the four countries." This is what it means. When the people are pleased with orders and decrees, it is called harmony; when the upper and lower are close to each other, it is called benevolence; when the people get what they want without asking for it, it is called trust; and when the harm of heaven and earth is removed, it is called righteousness. Righteousness and trustworthiness, harmony and benevolence are the tools of a hegemon. If there is the intention to govern the people but there is no tool, it will not work.

A string of empty thoughts cuts off the prime of life

The people are gentle and kind, which is the teaching of the Book of Songs; broad-minded and far-sighted, which is the teaching of the Book of Documents; broad-minded and easy-going, which is the teaching of Music; clean, quiet, and subtle, which is the teaching of the Book of Changes; respectful, frugal, and solemn, which is the teaching of the Book of Rites; and the use of words and metaphors to compare things is the teaching of the Spring and Autumn Annals. Therefore, the mistakes of the Book of Songs are foolish; the mistakes of the Book of Documents are slander; the mistakes of Music are extravagant; the mistakes of the Book of Changes are thieves; the mistakes of the Book of Rites are troublesome; and the mistakes of the Spring and Autumn Annals are disorder. The people are gentle and kind without being foolish, which means they are deeply in the Book of Songs; broad-minded and easy-going, which is not extravagant, which means they are deeply in the Book of Documents; broad-minded and easy-going, which is not extravagant, which means they are deeply in the Book of Music; clean, quiet, and subtle, which is not thieves, which means they are deeply in the Book of Changes; respectful, frugal, and solemn, which is not troublesome, which means they are deeply in the Book of Rites; the use of words and metaphors to compare things is not disorderly, which means they are deeply in the Spring and Autumn Annals."
